SUSAN L. VALDES

Susan Valdes was elected to the School Board (District 1) in the November 2, 2004, General Election.  She is one of seven members responsible for making policy decisions and overseeing a budget of $2.6 billion for the 8th largest school district in the nation and the county’s largest employer with 30,000 employees. 

Prior to her full-time commitment as a Board member, Susan worked with recipients of the Hillsborough County Health Care Program, not only managing the clinic, but also assisting patients with the resources available for social services assistance.  She has been a classroom volunteer and a PTA member who continues to strive for the betterment of education and community culture.

She is presently the Vice-Chair for the Florida School Boards Association Multicultural and Diversity Committee, Vice-Chair for the Value Adjustment Board, and belongs to the West Tampa Chamber of Commerce and the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.  Susan currently serves on the Central Florida Coalition of School Boards, the Community Action Board, and the Lowry Park Zoo Advisory Board.  She is an active member of the Healthy Start Advisory Council, Florida Institute for Community Studies, USF Hispanic Advisory Council, and the Back-to-School Coalition of Hillsborough County.

Susan has lived in Hillsborough County since 1975.  She is a graduate of A.P. Leto Comprehensive High School in Tampa.  She is married to Gerardo, the Ybor City Ambassador, and has three children.  Her two older children are graduates of Leto High School, while the youngest is still attending Hillsborough County schools.
